Getting ready for Heart’s Delight

April 26, 2010

On Saturday I had fun with an interesting volunteer opportunity: helping the American Heart Association get ready for their annual Heart’s Delight Wine Tasting and Auction. The AHA office was located in Ballston and I met my friend Sherry there as well as two other fellow volunteers, Dan and Rachel. Several other volunteers came and went throughout the afternoon and we were all assigned various odd jobs including moving boxes, laminating place cards, tying ribbons on gifts and finally, designing book covers for decorative placement at the event. The latter was what Rachel, Sherry and I was assigned.

Decorating book covers is exactly what you’re probably thinking of: high school/junior high time frame where you stuck a paper cover over your text book and doodled all over it. That’s exactly what we did! We had easily a hundred books to decorate, and after four hours my hand wanted to fall off, but it was actually a lot of fun.

Sherry and Rachel were both very artsy and creative. Check out this picture of Sherry in action! As for me, I can barely draw a stick figure. So I came up with the idea of treating the book covers like passing notes or signing yearbooks. We had a lot of laughs over our pictures and the notes we “signed” in our “yearbooks.” Reminded me exactly how long ago graduating high school was (10 years for me), yikes! Anyway, part of the theme for the event is prom, so the theme went great.

The volunteer event was pretty simple, but I know that AHA really appreciated it. They have a lot more stuff to get ready before their big event May 8, which we are also participating in. More information to come on that one, so be ready. It’s just another example of how diverse volunteer opportunities are, and especially that even the simplest, smallest things can really go a long way!
